Abstract
CrossShade allows the creation of 3D-looking shaded production drawings from concept sketches. We use artist-drawn cross-section lines to automatically infer surface information across the sketch, enabling 3D-like rendering. Cross-sections function as an aid to both sketch creation and viewer understanding of the depicted 3D shape. In particular, intersections of these curves, or cross-hairs, convey valuable 3D information that viewers compose into a mental model of the sketch. We use this information to estimate the surface normals. Combined with conventional shaders, our normals facilitate the creation of shaded drawings as in the gallery below.
Biography
Adrien Bousseau is a junior researcher at INRIA Sophia-Antipolis in the REVES research group. He did his PhD in the Artis group at INRIA Rhône-Alpes, his advisers were Joëlle Thollot and François X. Sillion. During his PhD he also spent 6 months in Seattle as an intern at Adobe's Advanced Technology Labs under the supervision ofDavid Salesin, and 3 months in Cambridge at MIT CSAIL under the supervision of Frédo Durand and Sylvain Paris. Adrien Bousseau did a postdoc at UC Berkeley, working with Maneesh Agrawala and Ravi Ramamoorthi, before joining INRIA in 2010.
Adrien Bousseau works on image creation and manipulation, with a focus on 2D images (drawings and photographs). His past projects include work on image stylization, image simplification and image editing. He also worked on a novel vector primitive to draw smooth color gradients called Diffusion Curves. He received one of the three Eurographics 2011 PhD award for his research on expressive image manipulations.
